INTERN Q&A

Use this section for everyday internship questions. If something is personal, project-specific, or time-sensitive, contact the appropriate person on the VICs page.

GETTING STARTED

What should I do on my first day?

Come ready to meet your team, take notes, and learn how the agency works. Confirm your schedule, communication channels, current projects, and first assignment with your supervisor.

What tools should I have access to?

Confirm access to your AMA email or communication channel, shared project folders, calendars, task-management tools, and any approved design, analytics, or publishing platforms used by your team.

Who should I contact when I need help?

Start with the person leading your assignment. Use the VICs page for agency leadership, academic advising, project guidance, or payroll questions.

SCHEDULE, ATTENDANCE & WHAT TO BRING

When and where do interns work?

Interns are required to work in person every Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. throughout the Fall 2026 semester. The internship meets at 401 Ashe Street, Johnson City, TN.

Will I know what I am working on before Friday?

Yes. A weekly email briefing will provide an overview of who is working on what and what the team expects to accomplish. Review it before arriving on Friday so you understand the week’s priorities, can prepare any questions or materials, and are ready to begin productive work.

What should I bring each Friday?

Bring your laptop with you each Friday so you can access the CloudWise platform and complete your assigned work.

What if I need to change my schedule or miss a Friday?

Any change to the required Friday schedule must receive advance approval from Dr. Michelle Sullivan and be supported by a documented excused absence. Contact her as early as possible rather than waiting until the day of your shift.

How does the lunch break work?

A 30-minute lunch break is required. You may bring your lunch or leave and return after the break.

Is food storage or reheating available?

There is currently no microwave or refrigerator at 401 Ashe Street, so plan your lunch accordingly.

WORK & COMMUNICATION

How quickly should I respond to messages?

Acknowledge work-related messages during your scheduled hours as promptly as practical. If you need time to find an answer, confirm that you received the message and say when you will follow up.

What if I may miss a deadline?

Tell your project lead as soon as you see the risk. Explain what is complete, what remains, what is blocking you, and what revised timing seems realistic.

How should I ask for feedback?

Share the brief, the stage of the work, and the specific decision you need help with. Asking “Does this direction support the audience and goal?” produces more useful feedback than “Do you like it?”

Can I share a new idea even if it was not requested?

Yes. Connect the idea to the project goal, explain your reasoning briefly, and remain open to feedback or a different direction.

PAY & REVIEWS

What is the starting pay?

Interns are hired at $15 per hour.

How often are performance reviews?

Performance reviews occur every 30 days. Use them to discuss accomplishments, challenges, feedback, goals, and opportunities for additional responsibility.

Who handles payroll questions?

Melissa McKenna is the Payroll Specialist listed on the VICs page. Use that page for her current contact information.

PROJECTS & CONFIDENTIALITY

Can I include agency work in my portfolio?

Ask your supervisor before sharing client or internal work. Once approved, describe the challenge, your role, the process, the deliverables, and any measurable result.

What should stay confidential?

Treat unpublished campaigns, client information, internal conversations, passwords, private files, and performance information as confidential unless you receive clear permission to share them.

What should I save for my final reflection?

Keep approved examples of your work, key feedback, outcomes, lessons learned, and a list of skills or tools you used. Never save restricted client materials to a personal account.

STILL UNSURE?

Good interns ask questions. Find the right person and start the conversation.

Ask questions early. A five-minute conversation can save an hour of guessing.

Communication

Keep a running document of everything you complete, and submit it alongside your logged hours.

Time tracking

Don’t wait for perfect confidence before sharing an idea. Thoughtful participation is how you grow.

Confidence

Save drafts and document your process, not just the final design. Your thinking is part of the work.

Portfolio growth
